George Kelley scored twice and senior
Philip Poser made three saves as HBU men's soccer shut out visiting Lubbock Christian, 3-0, Friday evening at Sorrels Field.
"I thought the boys had a lot of great attacking moments tonight, especially in the second half," said HBU head coach
Steve Jones. "We had some very nice goals tonight and some very near misses. It was a good win against a very good technical team. I thought
Devon Grant and
Bryan Brody did a good job in the back tonight. There were several other players that had some really good moments for us tonight."
HBU scored all three of its goals in the second half, as Kelley scored the first two for the Huskies. Freshman
Marcelo Acuna had a three-point night with a goal and an assist, while
Marc- Anthone registered a helper.
Four different Chaps had a shot on goal. Fernando Rios made four saves and allowed three goals in 86:19. Tristan Putnam did not see a shot in 3:41.
Lubbock Christian had the best chance to break the scoreless tie late in the first half. With Poser out of position, Tristan Wehner took a shot towards an open net, but Brody headed the ball out of harm's way for a team save. Poser came back and stopped Mbongeni Ndlovu's scoring chance.
LCU outshot HBU, 7-4, in the opening half, while HBU had the only two corner kick attempts.
Kelley broke the scoreless stalemate in the 68th minute, as Acuna battled hard to break free from his defender and fed Kelley, who beat Rios far side.
HBU scored two goals in a span of three minutes, as Kelley knotted his second lamp lighter of the match, assisted by Marc-Anthone in the 82nd minute. Marc-Anthone sent Kelley an up-field pass, Rios tried to limit the angle, but Kelley ran around and scored into an open net. Acuna scored his first-collegiate goal three minutes later, as he scored a beautiful goal off a free kick outside the box.
HBU plays at Bradley Sunday, Aug. 30 at 7 pm, which will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
