Bauer Goes Deep in Softball’s Loss at SFA

Sophomore outfielder hits three-run shot for first home run of season

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Sophomore outfielder Cecilia Bauer hit a three-run home run in the top of the third to put HBU ahead of Stephen F. Austin, 6-3, in game two, but the Ladyjacks scored four unanswered to sweep the doubleheader, 7-6, Friday at SFA Softball Field. SFA won the first game, 8-0 in five innings.

In game one, SFA loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the second and put a four-spot on the board following a two-run error and a two-run double by Brittany Lewis.

SFA scored three more in the bottom of the third and added another in the fourth to put the run-rule in effect, but the highlight play for the Ladyjacks came in the top of the fifth, when centerfielder Lindsay Campbell ran towards the wall and dove with her back to the plate and robbed Caitlin Gunn, keeping starting pitcher Callee Guffey's no-hitter intact.

Laci Belovsky (6-8) took the loss in the circle for HBU, as she allowed nine hits and seven runs in 2.1 innings. Shannon O'Connor tossed the final 1.2 innings and gave up six hits and one run.

Seven players paced SFA with two hits apiece, as Lewis, Taylor Vick, and Hailey Hollingsworth each recording two RBIs. Guffee earned the no-hitter, as she walked one batter and struck out four.

HBU got on the board first in game two, as the Huskies took advantage of a pair of Ladyjack errors in the top of the first. Melissa Herman and Nicole Shedd had the RBI hits in the inning.

SFA took a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the frame as, with the bases loaded, Shalie Day cleared the bases with a three-run double to right-center field.

Herman led off the top of the third with a double which chased starter Makayla Sikes from the circle and brought Hannah Welch in. After Shedd's RBI single brought home the tying run in Herman, Madison Vonhagel singled, which put runners at first and second for Bauer, who cleared the bags with a three-run blast to left to lift the Huskies to a 6-3 lead.

SFA chipped away at the score, with single runs in the bottom half of the fourth and fifth innings to bring the deficit to one, 6-5, until the Ladyjacks scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. Alisa Hamilton led off the inning with an infield single, stole second, then crossed home and tied the game on Taylor Fraccastoro's RBI triple. The very next batter, Day, singled home Fraccastoro. HBU had a pair of walks in the top of the seventh, but couldn't take advantage.

Five different Huskies had two-hit games, while Bauer had the big hit and the team-high three RBIs. Shedd had two RBIs. Emily Mueller took the loss in relief, as she allowed four hits, two runs, and one walk in 1.2 innings. O'Connor gave up five hits, four earned runs, and five walks with one strikeout in 4.1 innings.

Lewis went 3-for-4 with a solo home run to lead SFA. Day went 2-for-2 with two walks and four RBIs. Guffey relieved Welch and earned the win, as she had two walks in 2.0 innings.

HBU (9-21 overall, 3-11 SLC) and SFA (11-24, 4-9) conclude the series with a 1 pm first pitch Saturday.
