BEAUMONT, Texas – HBU took a 2-0 lead, but Lamar scored five times in the bottom of the second to defeat the Huskies, 8-3, Saturday afternoon from the Lamar Softball Complex.
Nicole Shedd and
Victoria Granchelli each had two hits to lead HBU (6-13 overall, 0-3 SLC), while
Melissa Herman led the way with two RBIs.
Emily Mueller started and took the loss, as she lasted just an inning-plus.
Shannon O'Connor and
Laci Belovsky tossed the final five innings.
Leadoff hitter Casey Cromwell went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Lamar (10-9, 3-0). Sable Hankins had two hits while Stephanie Meeuwsen had two RBIs. Laura Napoli went the distance in the circle as she allowed seven hits, three runs (two earned), and two walks with a pair of strikeouts.
HBU drew first blood in the top of the first as
Shay Orsak led off the game with a single up the middle. She eventually scored on a Herman sacrifice fly.
Kay Schroeder gave the Huskies their second run of the game as she reached on a fielder's choice and
Alyssa Burnett, who led off the inning with a double, crossed home.
That lead was short-lived, as the Lady Cardinals erupted for five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-2 lead. Cromwell hit a two-run homer to center in the bottom of the third to give Lamar a 7-2 advantage.
HBU got one of the runs back in the top of the seventh, as Orsak led off the inning reaching base on an error and advancing to third on a double by Shedd. Orsak scored on another sac fly by Herman. The Lady Cardinals got a groundout to end the game.
HBU plays a doubleheader at Prairie View A&M Tuesday at 2 pm.
