HOUSTON – Northwestern State hit five home runs as the Lady Demons swept a doubleheader and the season series from HBU softball, 6-4 and 15-4 in five innings, Saturday from Husky Field.
Junior 3B
Shay Orsak went 3-for-7 with two RBIs in the doubleheader to lead HBU (6-16, 0-6 SLC).
Orsak went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in game one, while
Madison Vonhagel and
Libby Brown also had an RBI.
Laci Belovsky took the tough loss in the circle as she allowed five hits, six runs, three walks, and five strikeouts in the complete game.
Hailee Rhodes went 2-for-2 for Northwestern State (15-12, 6-0), while the 1-2 punch of Kellye Kincannon and Cassandra Barefield had five of the team's six RBIs. Baylee Gray started and took the no-decision, as she allowed five hits, three runs (one earned), and four walks with one strikeout in 3.1 innings. Mikayla Brown earned the win in relief as she struck out five and allowed two hits, one run, and four walks in 3.2 innings.
Northwestern State led 4-0 before HBU got on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Brown.
Shay Orsak and
Nicole Shedd hit RBI doubles that brought home pinch runner,
Erin Alaniz, and
Cecilia Bauer to bring the deficit to one, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth.
The Lady Demons got a huge insurance blast as Kincannon hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to make the score, 6-3. The Huskies got one of the runs back, as Vonhagel drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth and threatened for more, but Brown settled in and got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
In game two,
Alyssa Burnett went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Orsak, Shedd, and
Kay Schroeder also had an RBI. Brown did not have an official at-bat as she was walked three times.
Shannon O'Connor took the loss in the circle.
Four different Lady Demons had a two-hit game, while Brittany Jones and Micayla Sorosiak had four RBIs apiece. Mikayla Bouvier started and earned the win in the circle, as she allowed three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
The Lady Demons did all of their damage in the first three innings, highlighted by two grand slams. The Huskies scored three times in the bottom of the fourth, as Schroeder's RBI single got the inning going. Orsak's RBI groundout allowed Burnett to score and Shedd reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed
Victoria Granchelli to cross home.
HBU plays a doubleheader at Prairie View A&M Wednesday, March 18 beginning at 1 pm.
