HOUSTON – HBU will look to even the season series with Sam Houston State when the Bearkats come to Sharp Gym for a key Southland Conference game Saturday at 4 pm.

The game is the annual "Play For Kay" contest, which raises money and awareness for breast cancer. "Play For Kay" is named for Kay Yow, who coached North Carolina State, was diagnosed with breast cancer, and passed away in 2009. HBU leads the all-time series against SHSU, 5-3, but the Bearkats won the last meeting, 74-67, last month in Huntsville.

HBU (9-14 overall, 3-9 SLC) shot 50 percent (26-for-52) from the floor, but ran into a defensive buzz saw, as Lamar forced a season-high 33 turnovers in a 79-62 Lady Cardinals victory Thursday in Beaumont.

Erin McGarrachan was one of three Huskies in double figures, as she scored 19 points – two shy of tying her career high. Rachel Arthur finished with 18, while Anna Strickland had 14 points and a career-high four steals. Tayler Jefferson tied her career high of six rebounds and eclipsed the 300 career assist plateau Thursday.

On the season, Shanice Steenholdt continues to be the only player in the conference to average a double-double, as she leads the league with 10.3 rebounds per game and is second with 17.8 points per contest. Arthur and Jefferson are T-26th with 10.0 points per game apiece. Jefferson is 14th in the conference averaging 30.0 minutes per game. Strickland is seventh with 8.0 rebounds per game and second with 1.7 blocked shots per contest (behind SFA's Porsha Roberts' 2.4).

As a team, HBU leads the conference in field-goal percentage (45.8) and rebounding margin (+7.7). HBU is second in blocked shots (4.65) and fourth in field-goal percentage defense (39.1).

Sam Houston State (6-16 overall, 5-7 SLC) has lost three of its last four following a 63-48 defeat against Abilene Christian Thursday in Huntsville. Taylor Dorsey led the Bearkats with 18 points, while Saundra Guillory posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Shernise Robertson leads the conference with 19.6 points per game and is third averaging 34.3 minutes per game. Morghen Day is sixth with 3.6 assists per game.

Following the game, HBU hosts Incarnate Word next Thursday at 7 pm.
