HOUSTON – Twenty-seven members of the HBU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) spent their Saturday morning volunteering at the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament, held Dec. 5 from Copperfield Bowling Center, as part of the annual "Southland Gives Back" event. This is the second-straight year SAAC has volunteered at the tournament.

"It is really great to be part of a conference and to attend a school that encourages us to give back to the community," said women's soccer player and SAAC President Blake Martin. "Our student-athletes really enjoy being able to cheer on the kids and help out in any way we can to make the Special Olympics kids' day better."

The HBU student-athletes helped the athletes bowl in the correct order, visited, cheered and made a connection with each of the athletes and ensured that the scoreboard and lane was scoring and operating correctly.

Special Olympics bowling is one of the fastest growing sports. When it was first included at the 1987 Special Olympics World Summer Games, bowling was dominated by American athletes and hosted only 33 competitors. At the 1999 World Games, bowling boasted 388 athletes from 33 countries. Special Olympics offers bowling in every US program and in over 20 countries around the globe.
