MBB: South Dakota State Shoots Past HBU

CANCUN, Mexico – South Dakota State heated up early from 3-point range and made 11-for-20 for the game in a 92-68 victory over HBU in the Mayan Division of the Cancun Challenge Tuesday afternoon at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.
 
Senior guard Jourdan Stickler led HBU (1-4) with 13 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and handed out a pair of assists. Sophomore forward Terry Harris scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds, while junior guard Reveal Chukwujekwu added 11 points and led the Huskies with eight rebounds. Freshman guard Asa Cantwell nailed three from long distance to finish with nine points.
 
George Marshall made three threes to score a game-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists for SDSU (5-0). Deondre Parks chipped in with 17 points, Mike Daum scored 13 off the bench and Reed Tellinghuisen made all three of his 3-point attempts to finish with 11 points and led the Jackrabbits with eight boards.
 
SDSU shot 56.9 percent from the field for the game, went 15-for-18 from the line and outrebounded HBU, 37-31. The Huskies shot 36.7 percent for the game, including 7-for-18 from deep, and 17-for-20 from the stripe.
 
A three by Marshall helped the Jackrabbits build a double-digit advantage at 18-8 with 11:48 to go in the first half, but Stickler answered with a three of his own. Parks hit back-to-back threes to put SDSU ahead, 26-13, but Stickler knocked down a pair of free throws, junior center Cody Stetler threw down a putback dunk, then drilled a three to get the Huskies back within six with 8:33 left.
 
Tellinghuisen hit a three to stop the Huskies' spurt and starting an 11-2 run that put the Jackrabbits up by 15 with 4:53 remaining. Cantwell buried back-to-back threes to pull HBU back within a single-digit margin, but SDSU held the Huskies to one point over the final two minutes to take a 50-33 lead into the break.
 
Marshall opened the second half with a three that put SDSU up by 20, and the Jackrabbits led by as many as 34 at 75-41 with 12:06 to play. Harris scored 10 points for HBU from that point to help pull the Huskies back to within 24 by the final buzzer. 
 
The Huskies will play Rider to conclude the tournament Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. CST.
