Game NotesCANCUN, Mexico – The HBU men's basketball team will continue their participation in the Cancun Challenge and open bracketed play, facing South Dakota State in a 2 p.m. tip at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya near Cancun, Mexico, on Tuesday. The Legacy Sports Network with Lonnie King will carry the audio broadcast on HBUHuskies.com, while a YouTube stream of the game will also be available.
HBU (1-3) is coming off a 72-56 loss at Illinois State on Saturday. The Huskies entered the lockerroom down two points at halftime, but were outscored 44-30 in the second period. Sophomores
Josh Ibarra and
Trey Patterson led the team with 10 points each. Ibarra finished 5-of-9 from the floor with eight rebounds, two blocks and two assists, while Patterson knocked down two shots from the field and turned in a perfect 6-for-6 showing from the free throw line across 20 minutes played off the bench.
On the season, senior
Jourdan Stickler is tied for the Southland Conference lead with a 1.000 free throw percentage, shooting 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Patterson ranks second in the league with a .706 field goal percentage, while senior
Anthony Odunsi is third in assists (4.5 per game) and
Isaiah Robinson is tied for fifth in blocks (1.3 per game).
The Jackrabbits are off to a perfect 4-0 start to the year, the program's best start since the 2010-11 season, having downed Chadron State (87-52), Weber State (85-68), Illinois State (83-67) and TCU (76-67). SDSU has five players averaging double figures, led by Deondre Parks' 17.3 points per game.
Tuesday's tilt marks the first of two games for HBU in Mexico. Competing in the tournament's Mayan Division, the Huskies will play again on Wednesday, seeing the likes of either Cleveland State or Rider in a game time to be determined. The third place game of the bracket is set for 11:30 a.m. with the championship game to follow at 2 p.m.
