HOUSTON – Incarnate Word jumped out to an early lead, then held HBU scoreless in the second half of a 30-3 victory in the Southland Conference season finale Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium.

Sophomore linebacker Garrett Dolan recorded a school record 18 tackles and a sack for the Huskies (2-9, 0-8 SLC), while junior linebacker Dorrin Turner and sophomore safety La'Travien Gee each had nine stops. Sophomore linebacker Cody Moncure added eight tackles.

Sophomore running back Larry Day rushed 13 times for 60 yards, while sophomore running back B.J. Kelly rushed 12 time for 59 yards. Sophomore quarterback Max Staver completed 5-of-19 passes for 27 yards and an interception, and senior quarterback Jonathan Fleming completed 3-of-5 passes for 18 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Davis Iheanacho caught a pair of passes for 16 yards.

Trent Brittain completed 13-of-20 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown and also added a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Cardinals (6-5, 5-4). Junior Sessions rushed for 85 yards, while Kody Edwards made four catches for 16 yards and Clint Killough made two for 29 yards.

Joel Higgins led UIW with six tackles, while Michael Allen, Robert Johnson and Darrius Montgomery made five apiece. Robert Johnson had an interception and Padyn Giebler returned a fumble for a touchdown for the Cardinals' defense.

UIW totaled 256, with 153 yards on the ground and 103 passing, while HBU had 154 total yards, 109 rushing and 45 passing. The Cardinals converted 7-of-16 third downs, but the Huskies only converted 3-of-15.

UIW forced a three-and-out on HBU's possession to open the game, then went on a 13-play, 52-yard drive that covered 6:21. Facing fourth-and13 from the HBU 32, the Cardinals went for it and Brittain completed a 19-yard pass to Killough for the first down. Sessions got four-straight carries, before Brittain scrambled for a three-yard touchdown.

The Cardinals took over at the Huskies' 31 on the next possession, but they were pushed back and an illegal forward pass on fourth down resulted in a turnover on downs. Day carried HBU to a first down on three carries, but Staver had the ball knocked loose in his throwing motion by Myke Tavarres and Giebler scooped up the fumble to return it 47 yards for a touchdown.

In the second quarter, Kelly had a 13-yard run and Day ripped a 30-yard run down to the UIW 9. The Huskies had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by senior kicker Travis Shinn to make the score 14-3 with 10:44 left in the half.

HBU forced a three-and-out, but Staver was intercepted by Johnson at the UIW 40 with 8:29 to go. The Cardinals put together another 6:21 drive, going 60 yards in 13 plays and capped off by another Brittain scramble, this one from eight yards out, for a touchdown to send UIW to a 21-3 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, Brittain rushed for 25 yards on a third-and-14 to keep a Cardinals drive alive, then threw a 12-yard touchdown to tight end Cole Wick. The final tally of the game came when UIW blocked a punt out of the endzone in the fourth quarter.

HBU wraps up its second official FCS and Southland Conference season and will graduate seven seniors: Fleming, Shinn, defensive end Josh Jones, offensive lineman Greg Hadley, fullback Jonathan McGugin, tight end Max Brown and defensive back Mike Cole.
