VB: HBU Hits Road for Two SLC Matches

Huskies play at Northwestern State on Thursday and Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The HBU volleyball team will play two road Southland Conference matches, starting with a 7 p.m. first serve at Northwestern State on Thursday.
 
The Huskies (8-10, 1-3 SLC) are looking to snap a three-match skid after dropping a 3-1 decision to Southeastern Louisiana (Sept. 26) and consecutive 3-0 losses to Central Arkansas (Sept. 29) and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (Oct. 3) recently.
 
On the season, junior outside hitter Jessica Wooten leads the HBU offense and ranks 25th in the nation (third in the conference) with 0.45 aces per set. The native of Humble, Texas, also ranks seventh in the SLC with 3.05 kills per set and captains the back row with 2.88 digs per set. Junior setter Kayla Armer ranks fourth in the league with 9.17 assists per set.
 
Defensively, sophomore middle blocker Kayla Davenport leads the team with 1.00 blocks per set, followed closely by fellow middles Blair Gillard (0.98) and Allison Doerpinghaus (0.93).
 
Collectively, the Huskies sit third in the SLC in blocks (2.11), fifth in hitting percentage (.199) and sixth in opponent hitting percentage (.198).
 
The Lady Demons (3-15, 1-4 SLC) also enter Thursday's match having dropped their last three outings. NSU fell to Sam Houston State and Incarnate Word in five sets, being swept by Abilene Christian in between.
 
Junior setter Natalie Jaeger ranks seventh at the Division I level with 0.53 services aces per set. Senior middle blocker Glynna Johnson is third in the Southland in blocks (1.01) and fourth in hitting percentage (.365). Overall, NSU ranks fourth in the league in service aces (1.48 per set) and sixth in blocks (1.95 per set).
 
Following Thursday's match, HBU will visit co-SLC-leading SFA for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday. The Ladyjacks (12-8, 4-0 SLC) are riding 20-match conference win streak entering their tilt against fellow unbeaten foe TAMU-CC. SFA has won its last six matches overall.
 
Senior middle blocker Jacque Allen is the reigning SLC Defensive Player of the Week, registering 19 total blocks across matches against Prairie View A&M, Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian for the Ladyjacks. On the season, Allen ranks fifth in the conference in hitting percentage (.330) and leads the team with 0.99 blocks per set.
 
SFA's senior libero OJ Olson ranks second in the SLC in digs (5.09 per set), while junior setter Shannon Connell ranks third in the SLC in assists (9.95 per set).
 
The Ladyjacks are second in the conference in assists (11.55 per set) and digs (16.36 per set), third in kills (12.15 per set) and hitting percentage (.206), fourth in opponent hitting percentage (.190) and fifth in blocks (1.97 per set).
 
After the visit to SFA, the team will return to Sharp Gym for two matches, hosting Abilene Christian (Oct. 15) and Incarnate Word (Oct. 17).
