Allison Abendschein's goal nine minutes into the match was all that was needed as HBU women's soccer defeated visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 1-0, Friday afternoon.
Abendschein netted her third goal of the season to lead HBU (10-6-1 overall, 8-3-0 SLC), while
Sabriah Spencer registered an assist, as she has had a point in seven of the last eight matches. HBU outshot the Islanders, 12-5, in the match, as
Ellee Hall,
Kristi O'Brien, and
Gabby Rodriguez had three shots apiece.
Alanis Guevara and
Katie Turner split time in goal and combined for one save for the Huskies' fifth shutout of the season.
Nanna Poulsen had a team-best two shots and one shot on goal to pace TAMUCC (5-10-2, 5-5-1). Megan Delaney was busy in goal, making 11 saves.
After Delaney stopped shot attempts by Abendschein and
Rebekah Tovar, Spencer dribbled the ball into the box and sent a nice pass to Abendschein, who beat Delaney high.
HBU nearly increased its lead to 2-0 as
Autumn Wildung's shot rang off the post in the 40th minute.
The midfielders did a nice job in the second half, preventing the Islander offense to gather any momentum and get the equalizer.
Earning the second seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament, the Huskies get a first-round bye. The tournament will be held Nov. 5-8 in Conway, Ark.
