Marcelo Acuna scored twice – the latter tying the match at 2-all – but CSU Bakersfield scored two goals late to subdue HBU men's soccer, 4-2, Friday evening at Sorrels Field. The loss was the first at home this season for the Huskies (4-1-1).
Acuna led HBU (7-8-1 overall, 3-4-1 WAC) with four points on the night, while
Dominick Faletto and
Kenneth Shonaike each had an assist.
Chance Pope suffered the loss in goal as he made two saves.
Reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week, Jamie Carey-Morrell, had a three-point game to lead CSUB (7-4-4, 4-2-2). Nicolas Clever made one save between the pipes.
CSUB scored twice in the contest's first eight minutes. Carey-Morrell scored on a free kick at 2:19 and teammate Simon Doherty followed suit at 7:43 when he tallied off a corner kick. The Huskies settled down, however, and trimmed the deficit to 2-1 by halftime thanks to Acuna. Acuna collected a pass from Faletto and placed a shot past Clever in the 31st minute. Acuna's score came on the Huskies' first shot on goal.
By intermission, CSUB had a 7-2 advantage in shots. The teams divided four corner kicks evenly in the first 45 minutes.
The Huskies had the better of the play early in the second half and the hard work paid off in the 78th minute when Acuna registered his second of the game and team-leading tenth of the season. This time, Acuna converted Shonaike's cross pass to tie the match at 2-2.
But the Roadrunners silenced the partisan HBU crowd less than three minutes later when Christian Duarte scored what proved to be the game-winner. Duarte nailed a free kick just outside the box. The Huskies thought they scored the equalizer with three minutes remaining in regulation, as Acuna headed the ball past Clever, but the ball had gone out of bounds prior to the centering pass to Acuna. CSUB's Julian Zamora then put a cap on the scoring at 89:28 when he beat Pope.
CSUB outshot the home team 10-6 while the Huskies finished with a 5-2 margin in corners.
The Huskies conclude the 2015 home campaign Sunday when they entertain San Jose State, at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
