FB: Nicholls' Quick Start Subdues HBU, 38-17

THIBODAUX, Louisiana – HBU sophomore wide receiver D'Angelo Wallace had the first 100-yard receiving performance in the program's history, but Nicholls jumped out to a 21-0 lead and went on to down the Huskies, 38-17, in Southland Conference football Saturday afternoon at Guidry Stadium.
 
Wallace made six catches for 129 yards, including two that set up each of the Huskies' (2-5, 0-4 SLC) touchdowns, and sophomore Wesley Lewis added three catches for 43 yards. Sophomore running back B.J. Kelly scored both touchdowns on the ground, but HBU was held to just 30 yards rushing. Sophomore quarterback Max Staver completed 8-of-21 passes for 125 yards and an interception, while junior quarterback Tony Dawson was 4-for-6 for 66 yards and an interception.
 
Sophomore safety La'Travien Gee recorded a career-high 12 tackles, while sophomore linebackers Cody Moncure and Garrett Dolan made nine each. Moncure and senior defensive end Josh Jones each registered a sack.
 
Quarterback Tuskani Figaro completed 18-of-25 passes for 134 yards and rushed for 91 with a pair of scores for Nicholls (1-5, 1-3). Michael Henry rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns, while Tobias Lofton chipped in with 69 yards and a touchdown. Josh Singleton made six catches for 30 yards, and Stephen LeBouef made three for 44 yards.
 
B.T. Sanders and Hezekiah White led the Colonels with six tackles apiece, while Jeff Hall had both interceptions. Christian Boutte forced and recovered the first fumble by an HBU running back in 18 games, a span of nearly 600 carries.
 
Nicholls ran 85 plays to HBU's 48, outgaining the Huskies, 425-221 overall. The Colonels outgained the Huskies, 291-30 on the ground, while HBU held a 191-134 advantage passing.
 
Sophomore Terrance Peters fumbled and Nicholls took over at the HBU 9, leading to a three-yard TD run by Figaro. After the Huskies went three-and-out, Nicholls went on a 13-play, 72-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard touchdown by Henry. Henry scored another one-yard touchdown as time expired in the opening quarter to give the Colonels a 21-0 lead.
 
The Huskies answered in the second when Staver hit Wallace with a 49-yard completion down to the Nicholls 1. Kelly punched it in from there to put HBU on the board. Senior kicker Travis Shinn nailed a 43-yard field goal as time expired to make the score 21-10 heading into halftime.
 
Nicholls took the second-half kickoff and scored on its opening drive, getting a 39-yard touchdown run by Lofton, which was the only score of the third quarter. Figaro ran 14 yards for a touchdown with 9:01 left in the game, then Francis Condado made a 31-yard field goal with 6:29 to go to put the Colonels ahead, 38-10.
 
Dawson had completions of 15, 20 and 23 yards to Wallace, the last of which spotted the Huskies at the Nicholls 3. Kelly then punched it in again for his team-leading fifth touchdown of the season.
 
The Huskies return home for back-to-back games, first against Southeastern Louisiana Oct. 24, followed by Lamar Oct. 31. Both games kick off at 2 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
