VB: Huskies to Host Two Southland Foes

HBU will face Abilene Christian on Thursday, Incarnate Word on Saturday.

HOUSTON – The HBU volleyball team returns to Sharp Gym for two Southland Conference matches this week, starting with a 7 p.m. first serve against Abilene Christian on Thursday.
 
The Huskies (9-11, 2-4 SLC) are coming off a 1-1 showing on the road with a straight-set victory at Northwestern State (Oct. 8) and 3-1 decision at Stephen F. Austin (Oct. 10).
 
On the season, junior outside hitter Jessica Wooten is tied for ninth in the nation (third in the conference) with 34 service aces and 18th (third in the conference) with 0.48 aces per set. The native of Humble, Texas, also ranks seventh in the SLC with 3.04 kills per set and captains HBU on the back row with 2.74 digs per set.
 
Junior setter Kayla Armer ranks fourth in the league with 9.30 assists per set, while, defensively, middle blockers Allison Doerpinghaus and Blair Gillard both rank third with 1.00 blocks per set.
 
As a team, the Huskies are third in the conference in blocks (2.18 per set), fourth in hitting percentage (.200) and fifth in opponent hitting percentage (.193).
 
ACU (4-15, 4-2 SLC) has been resurgent of late. After starting the season 0-14, the Wildcats have posted a 4-1 record across their last five matches to sit fourth in the conference standings entering Thursday.
 
Seniors Madison Hoover (4.67 digs per set) and Jennifer Loerch (3.31 kills per set) lead ACU and rank third in the conference in digs and kills, respectfully. Senior setter Sarah Siemens ranks sixth in the Southland with 9.04 assists per set, while freshman middle blocker Lauren Walker ranks eighth with 2.08 kills per set.
 
Following Thursday's match, HBU will host Incarnate Word in a 1 p.m. meeting on Saturday. The Cardinals enter their Thursday tilt at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi with a 4-11 overall record and 2-4 mark in conference play.
 
Junior libero Claudia Hernandez leads UIW, ranking seventh in the conference with 3.60 digs per set, while freshman outside hitter Autumn Lockley sits eighth with 2.93 kills per set. As a team, the Cardinals are third in the SLC in assists (11.64 per set) and kills (12.76 per set) and fourth in digs (14.18 per set).
 
Next week, the Huskies will hit the road for a pair of conference matches, visiting McNeese State (Oct. 22) and Nicholls (Oct. 24).
