Huskies looking to go 3-1 in four-game stretch

HOUSTON – HBU will look to close its four-game home stand with its third win as the Huskies host an Abilene Christian team making its first trip to Sharp Gym Thursday. Tip-off is set for a 7 pm start.

ACU won the inaugural meeting between the two teams last season, 82-70, Feb. 6 in Abilene.

HBU (8-10 overall, 2-5 SLC) tied its season high of 11 blocks and had four players in double figures, but visiting Lamar outscored HBU, 48-29, and held the Huskies to 30 percent shooting in the second half in HBU's 80-64 loss to the Lady Cardinals Saturday.
 
Monet Neal and Anna Strickland each had double-doubles for HBU. Neal tied the game high of 21 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. She set new career highs of three blocks and 11 made free throws. Strickland had 12 points and game highs of 14 rebounds and five blocks.
 
For the season, Shanice Steenholdt leads the Southland Conference with 10.3 rebounds per game and is second with 17.8 points per contest. Strickland is second in the conference and T-67th nationally with 1.9 blocks per game. Steenholdt is third in the SLC with 1.6 swats per contest. Tayler Jefferson is sixth with 3.6 assists per game. As a team, the Huskies lead the conference with a 46.6 field-goal percentage and 5.3 blocked shots per game.

Abilene Christian (10-8 overall, 2-5 SLC) stepped out of conference play for the final time this season and defeated visiting Angelo State, 70-55, Monday night. Sydney Shelstead recorded game highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds in the contest.
 
On the season, Shelstead leads the Wildcats with 12.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Whitney West has hit 41 three-pointers and has a 29.7 percentage. Suzzy Dimba has a team-best 25 blocked shots and 46 steals.
 
As a team, ACU is shooting 40 percent from the floor compared to 39 percent for its opponents.

Following Thursday's tilt, HBU heads to Sam Houston State for a meeting with the Bearkats Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2 pm. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
