Women’s Basketball Hosts New Orleans Saturday

Huskies looking to go 2-0 in current four-game home stand

HOUSTON – After an impressive 21-point victory over visiting Central Arkansas Thursday, the HBU women's basketball team will look to win their second-straight game when the Huskies take on New Orleans Saturday, Jan. 17 at 4 pm. It is the opener of a doubleheader with the men's team.

HBU leads the all-time series, 2-1, and won last season's meeting, 66-54, Jan. 23 in Houston.

On Thursday night, HBU (7-9 overall, 1-4 SLC) forced Central Arkansas to shoot just 28 percent from the floor (11-of-40) and caused 21 Sugar Bear turnovers, as HBU won, 58-37.
 
Shanice Steenholdt led all players with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks, while tying the game highs of three assists (Tayler Jefferson) and two steals (Maisie Elston). It was Steenholdt's 10th double-double of the season and the 50th in her career. Anna Strickland had eight points, nine rebounds, and two assists.
 
For the season, Steenholdt continues to lead the Southland Conference with 18.9 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Her 1.7 blocks per game rank her second behind  SFA's Porsha Roberts (2.3). Strickland is third with 1.6 swats a contest. The Huskies lead the conference with 5.06 blocks per game. Jefferson is ranked fourth with 3.7 assists per game. Steenholdt is fifth and fourth in conference points (17.4) and rebounding (10.6), respectively.

New Orleans (2-11 overall, 0-4 SLC) dropped its fourth-straight game, a 76-56 defeat at Stephen F. Austin Thursday. Danielle Davis came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points.
 
For the season, Randi Brown leads the Privateers with 8.3 points per game, followed by Octavia Wilson and Halie Matthews with 7.8 and 7.7 points per game, respectively. Yasmin Taylor is tops with 7.1 rebounds per contest and 32 steals. Davis has a team-best 19 assists, while Mathilde Fogelstrom has 12 blocks.

After the game, HBU hosts Lamar next Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4 pm and Abilene Christian Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 pm.
