Softball Rallies to Defeat Bearkats in Walkoff

Victoria Granchelli’s RBI double scored Shay Orsak for winning run

HOUSTON – Junior Victoria Granchelli's RBI double scored Shay Orsak, as HBU scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to take the series finale from Sam Houston State, 3-2, Sunday afternoon from Husky Field.

Lauren Schwirtlich and V. Granchelli each went 2-for-4 for HBU (14-22 overall, 8-10 SLC). V. Granchelli and Holly Webb had an RBI apiece.

Emily Mueller started in the circle and pitched 5.1 strong innings, as she allowed five hits, one run, and one walk with four strikeouts. Shannon O'Connor (4-6) earned the victory, as she pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up two hits, one run, and one walk with one strikeout.

Tori Koerselman and Tiffany Castillo both went 2-for-3 for SHSU (22-18 overall, 11-6 SLC), as the Bearkats' seven-game winning streak was snapped. Taylor Gray and T. Castillo each had one RBI.

Shelby Lancaster (7-6) took the loss in the circle, as she allowed eight hits, three runs (two earned), and two walks with two strikeouts.

The Bearkats drew first blood, as T. Castillo hit a leadoff home run to dead-center in the top of the second. The Huskies answered in the bottom half of the inning, as Webb hit a sacrifice bunt with the bases loaded. She reached base safely on a fielder's choice, as V. Granchelli crossed home safely to tie the game at 1-1.

The score remained that way until the final inning, but both teams had chances prior to that. Kirsten Schwirtlich led off the bottom of the third with a double and the Huskies had runners at first and second and nobody out as Melissa Herman was hit by a pitch. But SHSU got a double play and a ground out to end the threat.

In the fifth inning, SHSU stranded two runners and HBU stranded the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning, as the game remained tied.

The Bearkats stranded two more runners in the top of the sixth. With runners at first and second and one out, Alyssa Coggins reached on a fielder's choice, as the Huskies got the lead runner out at third, then Sarah Allison also reached on a fielder's choice as Coggins was out at second to end the inning.

SHSU untied the game in the top of the seventh, as Jessica Slater hit a one-out single, then stole second. The Bearkats had runners on the corners following a Koerselman single. Gray reached on a fielder's choice as she hit a grounder to third base and the Huskies tried to get Slater at the plate, but the throw came seconds too late, as SHSU took a 2-1 lead. The Huskies got out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground out.

L. Schwirtlich led off the Huskies' portion of the seventh with a single to center. She tied the game at 2-2 as she came all the way from first on a Bearkats' throwing error. With Orsak at first because of the error, K. Schwirtlich sacrificed her over to second. Herman was intentionally walked to lead to V. Granchelli's heroics. She hit a 2-2 pitch to left-center field that scored Orsak for the walk-off win.

HBU begins an eight-game road trip Thursday and Friday, April 17 and 18, at Central Arkansas. Thursday's doubleheader begins at 4 pm, while Friday's single game starts at 2 pm.
