HOUSTON – The HBU women's basketball team will conclude the regular season Saturday, March 8 against McNeese State. Tip-off with the Cowgirls is for 3 pm.
HBU narrowly missed reaching the Southland Tournament in its first season in the conference, as Oral Roberts grabbed the eighth and final spot, despite losing at Stephen F. Austin Thursday. Even though there is a chance that ORU (8-9 SLC) would be in a four-way tie with HBU, Sam Houston State, and Southeastern Louisiana, ORU owns every tiebreaker.
At halftime of the men's game (7:30 pm start),
Wiebke Bruns will be honored as part of "Senior Day."
McNeese State leads the all-time series against HBU, 3-0, and defeated the Huskies by four, 66-62, in Lake Charles, La., on Jan. 18.
Shanice Steenholdt (22),
Rachel Arthur (17), and
Tayler Jefferson (15) combined for 54 points, but HBU (11-17 overall, 7-10 SLC) as a team shot just 34 percent in a 73-69 loss to Nicholls Thursday.
Steenholdt earned her 14th double-double of the season, as she added 14 rebounds to her game-high 22 points. Arthur finished four points shy of tying her career high of 21 points.
Steenholdt is second in conference scoring with 18.2 points per game and tied for second with 18.0. She is third in both conference rebounding (9.8) and overall rebounding (9.6). Arthur is second on the team with 11.6 points per game. She is averaging nearly 12 points a game in conference play. As a team, HBU is leading the conference in field-goal percentage (44 percent) and is 41st in Division I.
McNeese State (17-11 overall, 10-7 SLC) had won two straight and four of its last five before a 74-69 loss to the league's hottest team, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Allison Baggett led all players with 24 points, while Cecilia Okoye had a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Baggett is third in conference scoring with 17.5 points per game. She is tied for second with Steenholdt with 18.0 points per game in overall scoring. Okoye leads the Cowgirls with 9.2 rebounds per game. Jalyn Johnson has 118 assists to lead the team.
