Kirsten Schwirtlich has hit for Huskies

LAKE CHARLES, La. – HBU was held to just one hit in two games, as the Huskies dropped a conference doubleheader at McNeese State by identical 8-0 scores Wednesday evening at Cowgirl Diamond.

In game one, the game was scoreless until the Cowgirls had a four-run bottom of the second. Marisa Taunton had a two-run single, Alanna DiVitorrio hit a sac fly, and Lauren Langner hit an RBI single.

McNeese State added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single by Langner. The Cowgirls completed the scoring with a two-run single by Ashley Modzelewski in the bottom of the sixth.

HBU was held to just one hit in the game, which came off the bat of Kirsten Schwirtlich. Kendall Stiefel (1-6) took the loss in the circle, as she allowed eight hits, six runs, and one walk in 3.2 innings. Emily Mueller pitched the final 1.2 and gave up four hits, two runs, and one walk.

Taunton and Langner each went 3-for-3 for the Cowgirls, as Langner had a team-high three RBI. Jamie Allred (10-3) went the distance in the circle, as she allowed one hit and one walk, as she struck out five.

McNeese State wasted little time getting a lead in game two, as the Cowgirls scored twice in the bottom of the first, on an RBI single by Langner and an unearned run, as Tori Yanitor reached on an error.

The Cowgirls increased their lead to 4-0 with a two-run home run by Katie Roux in the bottom of the third. They broke the game open with a four-run fourth, as Taunton and Langner each had an RBI and Taylor Goree hit a two-run double.

Shannon O'Connor (1-5) took the loss for the Huskies, as she gave up six hits, seven runs (six earned), and two walks in 3.2 innings. Mueller came in relief and pitched the final one-third of an inning and allowed two hits and one run.

Rachel Smith (3-2) was one error short of tossing a perfect game, as she did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out four in the complete-game victory.

The Huskies (5-14 overall, 1-4 SLC) and Cowgirls (16-8 overall, 4-1 SLC) conclude the series Thursday at 5 pm.
