EIU Comes Back Late to Defeat Softball, 4-3

Lauren Schwirtlich and Kay Schroeder have two-hit days for the Huskies



MONROE, La. – Eastern Illinois scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to defeat HBU, 4-3, on the final day of the Mardi Gras Classic Sunday morning.

Lauren Schwirtlich and Kay Schroeder had two-hit days for HBU (3-6), while Shay Orsak went 1-for-4. Kirsten Schwirtlich and Alyssa Burnett each had an RBI.

Shannon O'Connor started in the circle and got a no-decision. She allowed nine hits, three runs (zero earned), and three walks with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Emily Mueller was the tough-luck losing pitcher, as she came on in relief and allowed one hit, one unearned run, and one run in one-third of an inning.

Eastern Illinois (6-3) had 10 hits, led by Hannah Cole who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Brooke Owens also went 3-for-4 for the Panthers.

Stephanie Maday went the distance in the circle and allowed five hits, three runs, and four runs with four strikeouts.

All of the scoring, except for the two runs in the seventh, came in the third inning. L. Schwirtlich started things off for the Huskies with an infield single in the top half of the inning. After stealing second, she advanced to third on a single by Orsak. L. Schwirtlich scored on a fielder's choice, as HBU had runners at first and second and still nobody out. Melissa Herman drew a walk to load the bases, and eventually scored home on a wild pitch to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

The Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, both unearned on an error. Owens scored on the error and Cole hit an RBI single.

In the bottom of the seventh, Cole led off the inning with a single, then advanced to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. Bailey O'Dell walked and stole second, so the Panthers had runners at second and third with nobody out. Ashleigh Westover bunt singled, which scored the tying run and placed O'Dell at third. April Markowski hit a sac fly that scored O'Dell for the winning run.

K. Schwirtlich and Orsak were named to the All-Tournament Team.

HBU hosts Texas Southern Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 3 pm in the Huskies' home opener.
