MONROE, La. – HBU got revenge against Southeast Missouri State, defeating the Redhawks, 6-3, but the Huskies lost to tournament host ULM, 4-1, on day two of the Mardi Gras Classic Saturday.
In game one,
Melissa Herman went deep and both
Kirsten Schwirtlich and Kay Orsak had two-hit games, with the former having a three-RBI game against SEMO.
Freshman
Emily Mueller earned her second win of the season, as she allowed seven hits, three runs (two earned), and four walks with five strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
Savannah Carpenter was the big swinger for SEMO, as she went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Keaira Schilling suffered the loss, as she allowed nine hits, five runs, and two walks with two strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Hannah Durham gave up a hit, a run, and a walk as she did not record an out.
SEMO took a 1-0 lead with a solo shot from Carpenter in the bottom of the first. The Huskies answered with a lead-off homer by Herman in the top of the fourth, but the Redhawks regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, as Haylee Krack hit a lead-off homer to make the score 2-1 SEMO.
A two-out RBI single by Orsak in the top of the fifth tied the game at two, but Carpenter hit an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to give the Redhawks a 3-2 lead.
It remained 3-2 until the top of the seventh, when Orsak hit another RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. With Orsak and
Daniella Rodarte on base, K. Schwirtlich cleared the bases with a three-run blast to left-center to give the Huskies a 6-3 lead.
SEMO threatened in the bottom of the seventh, with a one-out double and a walk placed runners at first and second, but HBU got a strike out and a fly out to end the game.
In game two, against ULM, HBU had four different hitters record a hit, while Herman registered the lone RBI in a 4-1 loss to the Warhawks.
Kendall Stiefel went the distance in the losing effort, as she allowed six hits, four runs (three earned), and one walk with six strikeouts.
Six different Warhawks registered a hit, while Alexis Cacioppo had two RBI. Robbie Dailey and Vanessa Garcia each had one RBI.
Melanie Coyne went the distance in the circle, as she allowed four hits, one run, and three walks with seven strikeouts.
ULM took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with one swing from Cacioppo, who hit a two-run homer. The Huskies trimmed the lead in half on an RBI single by Herman in the top of the third.
The Warhawks threatened for more in the bottom of the fourth, with runners at second and third and only one out, but the Huskies got a strikeout and a line out to end the threat and keep the score 2-1.
The Warhawks got their insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, as Dailey hit an RBI single and Garcia hit an RBI double to left-center to make the score, 4-1. HBU went down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
HBU (3-5) concludes the Mardi Gras Classic Sunday against Eastern Illinois at 10 am.
