Live AudioLive VideoLive StatsGame NotesEL PASO, Texas – For the second-straight week, the HBU women's basketball team heads to the Rio Grande, this time as the Huskies take on UTEP Saturday, Dec. 6 at 3 pm central from the Don Haskins Center.
UTEP leads the all-time series, 2-0, and defeated the Huskies, 67-58, Nov. 16, 2012.
In its last game, HBU (2-3) almost completed a 15-point comeback, as UT-Pan American used a 30-8 run from late in the first half to middle of the second to subdue the Huskies, 75-72, Saturday in Edinburg, Texas.
Monet Neal scored a career-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting. She also had eight rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal in 36 minutes. She forced an offensive foul in the waning seconds, giving HBU the chance to tie or take the lead down two.
Shanice Steenholdt led HBU with 24 points, while
Rachel Arthur had six points and a career-high six rebounds.
For the season, Steenholdt averages a double-double of 20.6 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, leading the Southland Conference in both categories. Steenholdt is second in the conference with 1.8 blocks per game. Arthur is second on the team with 10.8 points per contest. HBU is shooting 47 percent from the floor compared to 41 percent for its opponents.
UTEP (3-2) returned home after competing in the Hardwood Tournament of Hope in Mexico and defeated Eastern New Mexico, 84-49, Tuesday. Two Miners had double-doubles: Sparkle Taylor (25pts, 10rbs) and Camesha Turner (15pts, 11rbs).
The duo lead the team in season points, as Turner averages 15.2 points per game and Taylor follows with 11.4. Turner has a team-best 13 steals and is tied with Chrishauna Parker with 6.0 rebounds per game. Both UTEP and its opponents are shooting 39 percent from the floor.
After Saturday's game, HBU begins a four-game home stand next Saturday, Dec. 13 against Arlington Baptist at 4 pm from Sharp Gym.
