HOUSTON - HBU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) participated with the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament that is hosted in the Greater Houston region of Special Olympics. The event was held at Copperfield Bowling Center on Saturday, Dec. 6 and was part of the Fall 2014 Southland Conference Give Back event.

"All of our HBU volunteers had a great time," said HBU SAAC coordinator Alonzo Williams. "On our way back to campus, they were already asking about participating next year! We really have a great group of kids!"

Fifty-five members of HBU SAAC supported the athletes to bowl in the correct order, visited, cheered and made a connection with each of the athletes and ensured that the scoreboard and lane was scoring and operating correctly.

Special Olympics bowling is one of the fastest growing sports. When it was first included at the 1987 Special Olympics World Summer Games, bowling was dominated by American athletes and hosted only 33 competitors. At the 1999 World Games, bowling boasted 388 athletes from 33 countries. Special Olympics offers bowling in every US program and in over 20 countries around the globe.

Special Olympics conducts an annual National Unified Sports® Bowling Championship in conjunction with the opening of the American Bowling Congress Tournament.

Bowling is in the winter sports schedule for Special Olympics Texas with statewide competition at the Winter Games in December.
