NATCHITOCHES, La. – HBU sophomore defensive specialist
Beth Shecterle recorded 17 digs for the Huskies in their 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 17-25, 17-15) fall to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament Friday afternoon in Prather Coliseum at Northwestern State University.
Sophomore outside hitter
Jessica Wooten recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs for HBU (15-17, 9-8 SLC). Sophomore setter
Kayla Armer had a high of 45 assists for the Huskies. Senior outside hitter
Megan McStravick led HBU with a high of 20 digs, while senior libero
Haley Hoffman had 13 digs for the Huskies.
Brianna Brink led the Islanders with a double-double of 23 kills and 17 digs. Ashley Phelps recorded 17 kills for TAMU-CC, while Ivy Baresh had 10 kills. Kristyn Nicholson recorded a match-high of 51 assists for the Islanders, while adding 13 digs. Kate Klepetka led TAMU-CC with a match-high of 35 digs, while Hailey King had 16 digs.
In the first set, the Islanders led by four over the Huskies to make the set 6-2. HBU battled back in order to cut the deficit by one at 12-11. The Islanders were able to keep a lead over the Huskies for the remainder of the set in order to win 25-21.
In the second set, TAMU-CC took a 6-1 lead over HBU, but managed to score three straight points, which included a kill by senior outside hitter
Bailey Keith, to make the set 6-4. Later in the set, a kill by freshman middle blocker
Blair Gillard tied the Huskies 10-10 with the Islanders. TAMU-CC then took a six-point lead over HBU at 19-13 and kept their lead in order to win the set 25-21.
In the third set, HBU took a late lead at 16-18, but TAMU-CC was able to come back to tie 18-18. Double attack errors allowed the Huskies to take the lead once again, where they were able to keep their lead in order to take the set 22-25.
In the fourth set, the Huskies tied with the Islanders 5-5, but two errors allowed the Huskies to take a two-point lead at 5-7. TAMU-CC was not able to make a comeback to take a lead as HBU won the set 17-25 in order to tie the match 2-2.
In the fifth set, the Islanders came out with a four-point lead over the Huskies, but HBU cut their deficit by scoring three straight points to make the set 4-3, which included a kill by Keith. TAMU-CC answered back by scoring three straight points to continue their lead 7-3. The Islanders led by as many as six as they led 12-6. The Huskies fought back hard in order to tie late in the set 15-15, but TAMU-CC ended up scoring the final two points as they won the set 17-15.
The Huskies outblocked the Islanders 13-10. TAMU-CC outhit HBU 66-51. The Islanders outdug the Huskies 91-80.
This concludes the 2014 season for the Huskies. HBU will be graduating senior outside hitters
