Volleyball Sweeps Central Arkansas 3-0

HOUSTON – HBU senior libero Haley Hoffman led the Huskies with a match-high of 16 digs in their 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 26-24) victory over Central Arkansas, who is currently ranked second in Southland Conference, Tuesday night during Southland Conference volleyball in Sharp Gym.
 
Senior outside hitter Megan McStravick led HBU (14-15, 8-6 SLC) with a match-high of 12 kills and added four blocks. Sophomore setter Kayla Armer led the Huskies with a match-high of 35 assists. Junior middle blocker Allison Doerpinghaus and freshman middle blocker Blair Gillard each recorded four blocks for HBU.
 
Evie Singleton had nine kills and 14 digs for the Sugar Bears. Heather Shnars also recorded nine kills and added four blocks for UCA. Kristine Hjembo had 20 assists for the Sugar Bears, while Amy South had 12 assists. Shelbee Berringer recorded 14 digs for UCA.
 
In the first set, UCA took a 1-0 lead, but HBU came right back to tie 1-1. After tying again 2-2, the Huskies scored four straight points to take the lead 6-2, which included a kill by Doerpinghaus. The Sugar Bears then scored the next point, but HBU took another three straight points to lead 9-3, which included kills by senior outside hitter Bailey Keith, Doerpinghaus and McStravick. HBU continued their streak to lead 12-4, and led by as many as seven toward the middle of the set at 16-9. Although UCA scored four straight points toward the end of the set, it wasn't enough as HBU took the set 25-22.
 
In the second set, the Huskies trailed by two to the Sugar Bears. After tying the set 5-5, HBU trailed by five points, but a kill by McStravick ended their streak as the Huskies trailed 11-6. HBU was able to cut the deficit by just two points at 16-14 and later tied again 19-19. The Huskies then scored two in order to take the lead 21-19, which included a kill by Doerpinghaus. The Sugar Bears were not able to take a lead again as the Huskies won the set 25-23.
 
In the third set, HBU trailed by two, but were able to battle back to tie the set 2-2. The Huskies then fell behind for most of the set, but were able to tie the set again at 16-16. From that point, the set became a battle as the points were scored back and forth between the Sugar Bears and the Huskies. HBU and UCA tied again 20-20 from a kill by Gillard. They then tied once again 24-24 when HBU took the final two points, which occurred from a service error by UCA and a kill by Doerpinghaus, to win the set 26-24.
 
The Huskies outblocked the Sugar Bears 8.5-6. HBU outhit UCA by three kills. The Sugar Bears outdug the Huskies 52-47.
 
The Huskies will return to action to face Lamar University on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in Beaumont, Texas. HBU will then play at home on Saturday, Nov. 15 against Sam Houston State at 11 a.m. for Senior Day as they conclude their regular-game season.
