SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The HBU men's soccer team's enemy may have been rust following a 10-day layoff, as the Huskies opened WAC play with a 3-0 loss to Incarnate Word Friday night at Benson Stadium.
Stefan Lamanna led HBU (1-4-2 overall, 0-1-0 WAC) with three shots, while
Patrick Toh,
Gustavo Alvarado, and
Tobenna Uzo had two shots and one shot on goal each.
Kevin Suarez made four saves in goal.
Noah Keats had a five-point night to lead Incarnate Word (2-6-0 overall, 1-0-0 WAC), with two goals and one assist. He had a match-high six shots and three shots on goal. Kieran O'Boyle made three saves to earn the shutout.
Andrew Grossman gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the 11
th minute, assisted by Keats. Keats took a corner kick and sent a pass into the box. Amid the chaos, the ball found the feet of Grossman, who tapped the ball into the back of the net.
Eleven minutes later, in the 22
nd minute, Keats gave UIW a 2-0 lead, assisted by Dylan Kelly. Kelly passed the ball to Keats in the center of the box, who scored from six yards out.
UIW outshot the Huskies in the first half, 7-4, and had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Huskies put some offensive pressure to start the second half, but couldn't get anything on the scoreboard. Following an HBU foul in the 73
rd minute, the Cardinals scored their third goal of the match, as Keats had an individual effort, beating two defenders in the box.
UIW outshot HBU, 7-5, in the second half and 14-9 in the match. The Cardinals had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Huskies and Cardinals meet again in eight days, on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7 pm at Sorrels Field.
