Volleyball Slams Abilene Christian 3-1

Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Wooten leads Huskies.



ABILENE, Texas – HBU sophomore outside hitter Jessica Wooten led the Huskies with 18 kills, 10 digs and three block assists in their 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16) victory over Abilene Christian in Southland Conference volleyball Thursday evening.
 
Senior outside hitter Megan McStravick recorded 13 kills for HBU (8-12, 3-3 SLC). Sophomore setter Kayla Armer had a match-high of 46 assists against the Wildcats. Sophomore defensive specialist Beth Shecterle and senior libero Haley Hoffman led the Huskies defensively with 16 digs each. Junior middle blocker Allison Doerpinghaus had three block assists for HBU.
 
Jennifer Loerch recorded 15 kills for Abilene Christian. Sarah Siemens had 36 assists for the Wildcats. Erica Lambert had 18 digs for Abilene Christian. Siemens had 11 digs for the Wildcats, while Nicole Morales also recorded 11 digs. Lexi Mercier recorded a match-high of six block assists for Abilene Christian.
 
In the first set, the Huskies scored the first three points. Once Abilene Christian scored to make the set 3-1, HBU scored three more, including a kill by freshman middle blocker Blair Gillard. The Wildcats then came back to make the set 6-5, but the Huskies scored two more to keep their lead 8-5. A kill by Loerch made the set 8-6, but HBU came back with three, including kills by McStravick and Wooten. HBU managed to keep their lead in order to win the set 25-18.
 
In the second set, HBU took the first point, but Abilene Christian tied it 1-1 with a kill by Dorothy Swanson. After a kill by Gillard, the Wildcats tied it up again 2-2. The Huskies then fired four-straight points to take the lead 6-2. Abilene Christian then scored two points, but HBU answered with five points in a row to make the set 11-4. The Wildcats were not able to threaten for the rest of the set, leaving the Huskies taking the set 25-17.
 
In the third set, the Huskies scored the first three points, including a kill by senior outside hitter Bailey Keith. Abilene Christian then answered back in order to tie the set, but HBU returned with a point from a kill by Wooten. After a kill by Mercier to tie the set 4-4, the Huskies scored two. However, the Wildcats tied up the set again 6-6. It was then that Abilene Christian took the lead for the rest of the set, ending with a win of 25-20.
 
In the fourth set, HBU took the first point with a kill by Wooten. Abilene Christian answered to tie the set early 1-1. Once tying again at 2-2, the Huskies scored four straight points to take the lead 6-2. Once the Wildcats scored the next point, HBU then recorded another four points to keep their lead at 10-3. HBU did not look back to take the match 25-16.
 
The Huskies had 56 kills to the Wildcats' 41. Abilene Christian outblocked HBU 8-4. The Huskies outdug the Wildcats 59-52.
  
The Huskies return to action away on Saturday, Oct. 18 as they face the University of Incarnate Word at 2 p.m. in San Antonio.
