HOUSTON – The HBU women's basketball team will look to even its conference mark when the Huskies host their first two Southland Conference games this weekend at Sharp Gym. HBU plays Stephen F. Austin Thursday at 5 pm, then Northwestern State Saturday at 3 pm.
SFA leads the all-time series, 4-0, and won the last meeting in Houston, which was played in the 2011-12 campaign. Saturday's meeting between the Huskies and Lady Demons will be the first-ever on the hardwood.
In its last game, HBU (4-9 overall, 2-0 SLC) led by three at halftime, but Central Arkansas used a late 12-0 run to pull away in a close game and defeat the Huskies, 67-54, Saturday afternoon in Conway, Ark.
Erin McGarrachan and
Shanice Steenholdt led HBU with 10 points apiece. McGarrachan scored all 10 of her points in the first half, while Steenholdt had 10 second-half points. Steenholdt led the Huskies with six rebounds and two blocks.
Steenholdt leads the conference in conference points per game (21.0) and is third in overall scoring (18.1). Her 9.3 rebounds per game are second-highest in the conference. McGarrachan is second in both points and rebounds on the team with 10.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
SFA (8-6 overall, 2-0 SLC) won its fifth-straight game with an 89-59 home win over Sam Houston State on Saturday.
Porsha Roberts led four Ladyjacks in double figures with 18 points. Tierany Henderson earned a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
On the season, Roberts leads SFA with 15.9 points and is second with 7.4 rebounds per game, just 0.1 a rebound behind Henderson's 7.5 boards a contest. Taylor Ross has dished out a team-best 46 assists.
Northwestern State (8-6 overall, 1-1 SLC) defeated SHSU, 78-59, on Thursday, but fell to Lamar, 84-79, on Saturday at home. NSU plays at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday before playing HBU.
Against the Cardinals, Trudy Armstead led five Lady Demons in double figures, with 18 points, and she was also the top rebounder with eight.
On the season, Armstead leads NSU with 14.9 points, 6.3 rebounds per game, and 13 blocks. Keisha Lee follows in points with 15.8, while Chelsea Rogers averages 5.8 boards a game.
