BEAUMONT, Texas – Three Huskies earned double-doubles, four players scored in double figures, and four personal records were broken in HBU women's basketball's valiant 76-66 win at Lamar Thursday evening at the Montagne Center.
In HBU's (8-12 overall, 4-5 SLC) first-ever win against Lamar (1-4), three Huskies finished with double-doubles, led by two new personal records by
Monet Neal: 19 points and 19 rebounds.
Shanice Steenholdt scored 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, and
Tayler Jefferson earned her first collegiate double-double of 13 points and a personal-best 12 assists.
Erin McGarrachan rounded out the foursome with 16 points.
Lamar (11-9 overall, 6-3 SLC) was led by Gia Ayers with 18 points, followed by Dominique Edwards and Kiandra Bowers with 15 points apiece. Edwards and Caroline Adesulu pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
HBU started on fire, hitting its first four shots and leading Lamar, 8-5, with 17:17 remaining in the opening half. But the Huskies went cold, hitting just two baskets in 10 minutes, as Lamar outscored the Huskies, 21-9, to lead HBU, 26-17, with 7:44 to go in the first half.
A McGarrachan three-pointer cut the Huskies' deficit to three, 32-29, with under a minute to go, but the Lady Cardinals hit a jumper at the buzzer to lead HBU by five at the break, 34-29.
McGarrachan and Steenholdt led the Huskies with eight points in the first half, as Steenholdt grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Edwards led Lamar with eight points and eight rebounds.
HBU jumped out on a 12-4 run in the first 3:30 of the second half, as the Huskies took a 41-38 lead and forced Lamar to take a timeout. The run culminated on a steal by Jefferson and a trey in the corner by Jefferson, assisted by Steenholdt.
HBU went defensive and crashed the boards, hustling on every play. Neal hustled to keep a ball out of bounds and Steenholdt had two offensive rebounds en route to a made jumper. This turned a three-point Husky lead to a 12-point advantage. Lamar's dry spell ended with an Edwards layup at the 12:15-mark, which made the score 52-42 in favor of HBU.
Lamar came as close as nine on a few occasions in the second half, with the latest being a 73-64 score with a minute remaining in regulation. A pair of Ayers free throws cut the deficit to seven, 73-66, but that was all the closest Lamar would come, as a couple of Neal free throws sealed the win for the Huskies.
HBU concludes the first part of its four-game road trip Saturday at Sam Houston State. Tip-off is at 1:30 pm.
