BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Freshman forward
Tobenna Uzo scored two goals 90 second apart – the eventual game winner coming with six minutes remaining in regulation – as the HBU men's soccer team rallied to defeat LIU Brooklyn 2-1 Friday night at LIU Field.
In a match dominated by the Huskies, it was the Blackbirds who scored first, as Brice Merwine scored in the 25th minute unassisted. He shot from 30 yards out, sneaking the ball into the right corner of the net.
That was the only scoring in the first half, as HBU outshot the Blackbirds 14-2 and 5-1 in shots on goal. HBU had all six corner kick attempts.
HBU put the pressure on to start the second half, but LIU Brooklyn netminder Logan Keys stopped both
Kristopher Tyrpak's and
Gustavo Alvarado's shots.
All was quiet until the 82nd minute, when Keys got a glove on
Kyle Herbison's shot, resulting in a corner kick.
Thilo Borgmann took the corner, and the Huskies finally got one past the Blackbird goalkeeper, as Uzo scored at the 82:22-mark.
In the 83rd minute, Uzo struck again, assisted by
Ricky-Paul Mupier, which was Mupier's first collegiate point.
The Huskies tried to add some insurance, as they had two more corner kicks after taking a 2-1 lead, but couldn't convert. The Blackbirds couldn't get a shot attempt in the waning minutes as the Huskies held on for their second-straight win.
HBU outshot LIU Brooklyn 27-4 in the match and 11-1 in shots on goal. The Huskies had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
