HOUSTON – In front of a packed house under the lights at Sorrels Field, the HBU women's soccer team came close to put one away on several occasions, but settled with a scoreless double overtime tie with the visiting University of Houston Cougars Sunday evening.
HBU was led in shots by
Natalie Hager and
Molly Missimer with four apiece. Hager led the Huskies with three shots on goal.
Stephanie Castellon improved her record to 1-3-1 as she made eight saves in goal.
Kayla Walker led all players with seven shot attempts, while she had a team-best three shots on goal for Houston.
Sydney George's record changed to 1-1-1 as she made 11 saves.
The action was fierce the entire 110 minutes. HBU started out of the gate putting pressure on the Cougars and forcing George to make a couple of saves early.
HBU outshot the Cougars 10-4 in the first half and 7-2 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were 4-0 in favor of the Huskies.
The second half was a mirror image, as the Cougars outshot HBU 10-4 in the second stanza, while doubling up the Huskies, 4-2, in shots on goal. Castellon made a point-blank save on Walker in the 64th minute to keep the match scoreless.
George made a save on a shot by Hager in the 88th minute. The Huskies had a corner kick in the waning seconds, but could not get an adequate opportunity, as the two teams entered overtime.
Both goalkeepers made one save in the first part of overtime, until the Huskies put the pressure on in the final two minutes.
Alessia Dal Monte's shot was blocked, then
Amina Radoncic's shot went just wide. Just before the buzzer sounded,
Molly Missimer's shot hit the post, sending the teams to a second overtime session.
Each goalkeeper made one save in the second overtime period. For the match, HBU outshot Houston 21-16 and 11-8 in shots on goal. HBU had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
HBU (1-5-1) will begin Southland Conference play on the road, as the Huskies will play at fellow conference newcomer Abilene Christian on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1 pm.
