Baseball Lands Three on All-GWC First Team

NEWARK, N.J. – Houston Baptist junior pitcher Ryan Lower and senior outfielders Jake Gonzalez and Luke Clements were each voted by the head coaches as Great West All-Conference First-Team selections, the league office announced at the pre-tournament banquet Monday night.
 
Lower, a righthander, went 5-0 with a league-leading 0.91 ERA, three complete games, two shutouts, 32 strikeouts and a .183 opponents batting average in seven conference starts. For the season, he went 7-4 with a league-best 2.43 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 13 appearances, including 12 starts. Lower tossed back-to-back shutouts against NYIT and Chicago State to record a streak of 24-straight scoreless innings.
 
Gonzalez, a centerfielder, is hitting .313 overall for the season with 12 doubles, a triple, three home runs, is tied for the team lead with 32 RBIs and has scored 36 runs. In conference play, he hit .371 with 10 doubles, two home runs, a team-leading 22 RBIs and scored 20 times. In the regular-season finale, Gonzalez broke the HBU single-game record with four doubles, allowing him to become the Huskies' all-time leader with 59 career two-baggers. He also ranks third all-time with 231 hits, fourth with 159 RBIs, tied for fourth with 12 triples and 11th with 18 home runs. He also ranks fourth with 10 career saves on the mound.
 
Clements, a leftfielder, leads HBU with a .337 batting average overall to go along with 10 doubles, three triples, four home runs, is tied for the team lead with 32 RBIs and has scored a team-leading 47 runs. In conference play, he hit .319 with five doubles, three triples, two home runs, 14 RBIs and scored a team-leading 26 runs. Clements was twice named Great West Conference Player of the Week during the season.
 
HBU tied for second in the final Great West standings, but will be the third seed in the Great West Conference Tournament. The Huskies open against sixth-seeded host NJIT Tuesday at 6 p.m. CDT at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark.
