CHICAGO, Ill. – Fifth seed Houston Baptist takes on fourth seed – and tournament host – Chicago State in the Great West Conference Quarterfinals on Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 pm.
The Huskies and Cougars split the season series 1-1, with the home team victorious in each meeting. Chicago State won, 73-62, in Chicago on Jan. 26, while HBU was victorious in Sharp Gym on March 7, 92-57. In the two games,
Shanice Steenholdt averaged 25.5 points per game.
In HBU's (6-23, 1-7 GWC) final regular season game, the Huskies shot just 30% from the floor and 45% from the charity stripe, in a 65-49 loss to visiting NJIT on March 9.
Steenholdt followed up her 33-point performance against Chicago State with a 21-point, 16-rebound effort. It was her 16th double double and the 16 rebounds tied her season high.
On the season, Steenholdt leads the Huskies - and the conference - with 18.6 points per game. Her 10.1 rebounds per game is ranked third in the conference. Steenholdt also leads the Huskies with 49 blocks and 70 steals.
Erin McGarrachan and
Tayler Jefferson are tied with 8.7 points per game apiece. McGarrachan's 5.9 rebounds per game are behind Steenholdt, while Jefferson leads the team with 42 made 3-pointers, 32% 3-point percentage, and 86% FT percentage.
In a battle for the third seed in the conference tournament, Chicago State (4-24, 2-6 GWC) lost on the road to UT-Pan American, 71-61, on March 9. Tierra Williams came off the bench to score a game-high 26 points for the Cougars.
T. Williams leads the Cougars on the season with 9.3 points per game. Paris Williams is next with 8.3 points per game and her 4.6 rebounds per game are behind Layne Murphy's 5.7. Jackie Jones leads the team with 119 assists and 62 steals.
The winner of the HBU-CSU game will face top seed Utah Valley on Friday, March 15 at 2:30 pm.
