HOUSTON – Houston Baptist concludes the home-and-home series with New Orleans, when the Privateers come to Sharp Gym for a 2 pm tip on Sat., Feb. 9.
HBU is 1-0 all-time against UNO, with the last meeting coming last month in New Orleans. HBU broke open a close 22-20 game at the half to outscore New Orleans 38-25 in the second half for an HBU 60-45 win at Lakefront Arena on Jan. 12. It was the Huskies' first win over an NCAA Division I opponent since a 75-64 win over South Dakota in the first round of the Great West Conference tournament on Mar. 9, 2011.
Shanice Steenholdt led HBU with 23 points, while
Erin McGarrachan had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Keri Thomas led the Privateers with 15 points.
A week after turning the ball over a season-high 30 times, Houston Baptist (4-17) turned the ball over a season-low eight in a hard-fought 75-71 loss to Utah Valley on Feb. 2. The Huskies led the Wolverines at halftime, the first time in the series' history.
Steenholdt recorded her 12th double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds. She also had all three of the team's blocks and two steals. McGarrachan scored 12 points, while
Tayler Jefferson had nine points, four assists, and three steals.
Playing without conference preseason player of the year, Sammie Jensen, Utah Valley was led by Tina Doughty with 30 points and Kaycee Mansfield with 28.
On the season, Steenholdt leads HBU with 17.5 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 34 blocks, and 51 steals. Jefferson is second on the team with 9.6 ppg, while McGarrachan is second in rebounding, with 6.2 rpg.
New Orleans (1-18) lost at home to Murray State, 69-56, on Feb. 6. The Privateers haven't won since a 68-58 decision over Arkansas-Monticello on Nov. 20.
Against the Racers, Keri Thomas led UNO with 21 points, while Mirjam Sipos had 19. Murray State scored 16 of the first 18 points of the game.
Murray State was led by Erika Sisk and Mariah Robinson with 21 points each. Robinson also grabbed 11 rebounds.
On the season, Thomas leads UNO with 13.9 ppg and 35 steals. Mathilde Fogelstrom has 20 of the team's 36 blocks and is the top rebounder, averaging 7.9 rpg.
