HOUSTON – After a thrilling overtime win over visiting Texas State Wednesday night, Houston Baptist resumes Great West Conference play hosting UT-Pan American on Sat., Feb. 23 at 2 pm.
UTPA leads the all-time series, 13-1, including an earlier meeting last month in Edinburg, Texas. In that last meeting, HBU shot just 24% for the game (19% in the second half), as UTPA turned a five-point halftime lead into a 26-point win, 71-45, Jan. 19 in Edinburg.
Erin McGarrachan scored a career-high 18 points for the Huskies.
Shanice Steenholdt was held to just six points, but grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Joyea Marshall and Jasmine Thompson both led UTPA with 11 points, while Johnondra Patterson added 10. Cassandra Moody came off the bench to grab a team-high eight rebounds, while adding six points, one assist, and one block.
HBU (5-20, 0-4 GWC) had a career night from
Wiebke Bruns and another dominating performance from Steenholdt, as the Huskies defeated Texas State in a wild 78-76 (ot) game on Feb. 20.
Steenholdt recorded her 15th double-double on the season, with 32 points and 13 rebounds. She also had three assists, three blocks, and two steals. The 32 points are the second-most she has ever scored, behind the 40-point outburst against Huston-Tillotson on Jan. 10, 2012. Bruns posted career highs of 20 points and eight rebounds.
Diamond Ford led the Bobcats with 22 points.
On the season, Steenholdt leads the Huskies with 18.1 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 43 blocks, and 58 steals.
Tayler Jefferson and McGarrachan are second and third in points, with 8.8 and 8.5 ppg, respectively. McGarrachan is second on the team with 5.9 rpg. Bruns has 64 assists and 28 steals.
UTPA (9-15, 2-4 GWC) lost a tough home conference game against Utah Valley, 51-50, on Feb. 16. Franchesca Simon hit a floater to give UTPA the lead with four seconds left, but UVU's Sammie Jensen scored on a layup as time expired for the win.
Cassandra Moody recorded a double-double for UTPA, with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Jensen led the Wolverines with 21 points and 21 boards.
On the season, Joyea Marshall leads UTPA with 9.7 ppg and is second with 7.2 rpg. Moody leads the team with 7.6 rpg and is third with 7.7 ppg. KaeLynn Boyd is second on the team with 7.9 ppg, while leading the team with 83 assists and 38 steals.
