UTPA shot only 37 percent for the game, 29 percent in the second half, and went 11-for-14 from the line. The Broncs entered the game as the leagues top 3-point shooting team, but went only 1-of-8 from long range. The Broncs outrebounded the Huskies, 36-29, but turned the ball over 16 times, leading to a 15-8 advantage for the Huskies in points off turnovers.

Hill hit his second 3-pointer of the half, then Lewis hit a jumper off the glass in the lane to give the Huskies a 12-8 lead with 13:11 remaining. The Broncs tied the game, 14-14, on layups by Jamal Dantzler and Hines, but Womack and Lewis each knocked down a 15-footer to put HBU back on top. Hines made another layup, but Bernardi hit a pair of free throws, and Smith made a steal and took it the distance to take a 22-16 lead with 5:52 to go.

On the ensuing possession, Urbanus missed a 15-footer, Smith grabbed the rebound for the Huskies and dished to Lewis, who was fouled with 19 seconds on the clock. Lewis made both free throws to give HBU a four-point advantage, then Bernardi blocked Provost's shot, grabbed the rebound and was fouled with eight seconds to go.
