HOUSTON – HBU men's soccer clicked on all cylinders, as the Huskies defeated visiting San Jose State, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.
The win snapped a six-match winless streak for the Huskies (0-4-2) and the five goals were the most since defeating Oral Roberts, 5-1, to open the 2012 campaign.
Patrick Toh scored the eventual game winner in the 24th minute, assisted by
Kyle Herbison. Herbison sent a cross pass into the box and Toh directed the ball into the left side of the net. Eighteen seconds later, SJSU's Jamison Loveless was given a yellow card, giving the Huskies a free kick. Eight seconds later, at the 24:38-mark, the Huskies scored again, as
Mark Gendi took the free kick and passed it to
Walter Kromholz, who scored past Spartans' goalkeeper Emmanuel Espinosa.
The Spartans almost cut the lead to one in the 37th minute, as Sam Croucher's header attempt hit the cross bar.
Two seconds shy of the 40th minute, SJSU's Andy Kelly got his second yellow card of the day, resulting in a red card, as the Spartans had to play a man down the remainder of the match.
HBU doubled up SJSU in shots, 12-6, in the opening half, and had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
It took 11 minutes in the second half for the Huskies to strike again, this time it was the tandem of Gendi and
George Kelley. On the keeper's left side, Kelley passed to the top corner of the box to Gendi, who ripped a shot past Espinosa for a 3-0 HBU lead.
Tobenna Uzo's rocket of a shot rang off the left post in the 63rd minute, but he would not be denied again, as he scored the Huskies' final goal on a beautiful cross pass header from
Stefan Lamanna in the 68th minute. Twenty-three seconds prior to Uzo's strike,
Ricky-Paul Mupier scored his first-collegiate goal, assisted by
Kristopher Tyrpak.
HBU outshot SJSU in the second half, 12-5, and 24-11 in the match.
Kevin Suarez earned the win in goal and made two saves. Espinosa suffered the loss, as he made four saves.
Seattle defeated Kansas City earlier today, while Air Force defeated Bakersfield, so the Huskies and AFA are tied for first place atop the WAC East standings, while Kansas City is one point behind in third place with one match remaining in the regular season.
HBU (8-6-2, 3-4-2 WAC) concludes the regular season against Kansas City Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7 pm. It will be Senior Day for Gendi, Kromholz, Tyrpak, Herbison, and
John McDuffee.
