JACKSON, Miss. – The HBU women's basketball team continues its three-game road trip, as the Huskies play at Jackson State Friday night at 6 pm, then South Alabama Monday evening at 7:05 pm.
Jackson State won the only meeting between the two schools last season in HBU's Husky Classic, as the Tigers defeated the Huskies, 65-57.
Shanice Steenholdt had a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Tiffany Kellum led JSU with 16 points.
South Alabama leads the all-time series, 2-0, defeating the Huskies in Mobile back in 2008-09, and in Houston to open the 2012-13 campaign.
Sam Houston State opened up the second half on a 19-5 run to lead HBU (2-2) by 16 with 11:25 remaining in regulation, en route to an 85-68 non-conference win over the Huskies Tuesday night.
Erin McGarrachan set a new career mark with 21 points. She grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and set another new record with six assists. Steenholdt recorded her fourth-straight double digit point effort, with 16 points.
Ekemini Essien also set a new record with seven points at SHSU, while
Meghan Shank had a career-high three assists.
On the season, Steenholdt leads the Huskies with 18.3 points per game, followed by
Rachel Arthur with 13.8.
Anna Strickland is tops on the boards, with 7.5 rebounds per game.
Jackson State (0-4) lost at Memphis, 77-64, Monday night. Alisa Ross led the Tigers with 19 points, while Ayanna Hardy-Fuller and Bridger Robinson each grabbed six rebounds.
On the season, Hardy-Fuller and Ross each lead the Tigers with 10.0 points per game. Ke'ra St. John leads the team on the boards with 6.3 rebounds per game.
South Alabama (0-3) lost its home opener to Nicholls State Wednesday night, 68-60. Meghan Dunn led the Jaguars with 16 points, followed by Rachel Cumbo with 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
On the season, Dunn leads South Alabama with 13.7 points per game, followed by Cumbo with 9.3. Ronneka Robertson leads the team on the boards, with 7.7 rebounds per game.
