Grand Canyon Scores Three Second-Half Goals to Defeat Men’s Soccer

HOUSTON – Grand Canyon scored three second-half goals to defeat the HBU men's soccer team, 3-0, Friday evening at Sorrels Field.

HBU dominated the shots in the opening half, 14-3, but only four of those shots hit the target, as Grand Canyon goalkeeper, Joshua Zehring, made four saves in the first half. HBU netminder Kevin Suarez made one save.

Alberto Sanchez Garcia gave the 'Lopes a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute, as he scored unassisted off a free kick.

HBU almost scored the equalizer, but Zehring saved Tobenna Uzo's shot in the 64th minute. Less than a minute later, he saved George Kelley's shot attempt to keep the score 1-0 GCU.

Victor Cardoso's first goal of the season gave the 'Lopes a 2-0 lead, as he scored in the 78th minute, assisted by Amer Sasiveravic. Sasiveravic sent a cross pass from the left side and Cardoso scored in the left side of the net.

Seven minutes later, Sanchez Garcia scored his second of the night, assisted by Kyle Ciliento, to make the score 3-0 GCU. Sanchez Garcia's shot went into the lower left corner of the net.

GCU doubled up the Huskies on shots, 12-6, in the second half, as HBU outshot the 'Lopes for the match, 20-15. Corner kicks were 7-4 in favor of GCU.

Uzo had two shots on goal for the Huskies, while four other players had one. Suarez took the loss in net, as he made four saves.

Sanchez Garcia led the 'Lopes with three shots on goal. Zehring made six saves as he earned the win in goal.

HBU (7-4-0, 2-2-0 WAC) hosts Air Force Sunday at 12 pm.
