EDINBURG, Texas –
Erin McGarrachan scored a career-high 18 points, but Houston Baptist shot just 19% and was outscored in the second half, 46-25, as the Huskies lost at UT-Pan American, 71-45, Saturday evening at UTPA Fieldhouse.
McGarrachan went 7-of-17 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the line in her career night for HBU (4-15, 0-1 GWC).
Shanice Steenholdt led all players with 13 rebounds, while also adding six points and two blocks.
Three players for UTPA (7-12, 1-2 GWC) finished in double figures, led by Joyea Marshall and Jasmine Thompson with 11 points apiece. Johnondra Patterson added 10. KaeLynn Boyd scored all eight of her points in the first half.
UTPA opened the game outscoring the Huskies, 9-4, prompting a Husky timeout at the 17:06-mark. The Huskies rattled off six of the next eight points in the game to trail by just one, 11-10, as McGarrachan had scored the last eight points for the Huskies.
UTPA scored the next four points to take a 15-10 lead with 10:06 remaining in the opening half, but
Tayler Jefferson and McGarrachan each made layups and Weibke Bruns' jumper culminated the Huskies' 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game, at 16-15 with 7:35 remaining in the first half.
The Broncs took a timeout after HBU took the lead and the timeout helped UTPA, who regained momentum with a 7-0 run to take the lead back again, at 22-16, with just under four minutes to go in the first half.
The Huskies used some defensive pressure to keep the Broncs off the scoreboard, as the ensuing Broncs possession resulted in two blocks by
Monet Neal. Neal later answered a three-pointer by Bianca Torre with a layup with 41 seconds left in the half, to make the deficit five, 25-20.
McGarrachan was tied with UTPA's KaeLynn Boyd for the half high in points, with eight. McGarrachan and Steenholdt each had five rebounds, as did the Broncs' Jasmine Thompson.
HBU shot just 19% in the second half, compared to UTPA's 55%, as the Broncs took command of the game. The Broncs started the half on an 11-2 run before the Huskies scored their first basket of the half, a layup by Steenholdt at the 14:35-mark.
The Huskies didn't make a basket until three minutes later, as McGarrachan's layup made the score 46-26 UTPA with 11:08 to go in regulation.
HBU once again went on a dry spell, as McGarrachan's basket at the 5:52-mark stopped a 10-2 run, as UTPA led HBU, 56-30.
The Huskies made their first three-pointer of the game, as
Rachel Arthur's trey cut the Bronc lead to 23, 58-35, with 4:29 remaining in regulation.
The Huskies closed out the final 4:29 with baskets by McGarrachan and Steenholdt and a three-pointer by Jefferson.
HBU will look for its first conference win of the season at Chicago State on Sat., Jan. 26 at 2 pm.
