NEW ORLEANS, La. – Behind Shanice Steenholdt's dominating second half and Erin McGarrachan's double-double, Houston Baptist broke several streaks with a 60-45 win over New Orleans Saturday afternoon from Lakefront Arena.

The win over the Privateers was the first win over a Division I opponent since a 75-64 win over South Dakota on Mar. 9, 2011, in the Great West Conference quarterfinals in Orem, Utah. The win snapped a 21-game road losing streak. The Huskies' last true road victory over a Division I opponent was a 51-48 win at Sam Houston State on Dec. 11, 2010.

Shanice Steenholdt led HBU (4-13) with 23 points against New Orleans, 21 points coming in the second half alone. McGarrachan recorded her second-collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Wiebke Bruns had five assists and six steals, while Ashleigh Nwanguma had eight rebounds.

Keri Thomas led UNO (1-15) with 15 points, while Mirjam Sipos scored 13. Mathilde Fogelstrom led the Privateers with 11 rebounds.

HBU wasted little time taking control of the game, scoring the first seven points of the contest, culminated by a three-pointer by Joselyn Pugh at the 17:06-mark.

Keri Thomas stole the ball 90 seconds later and made a layup for the Privateers, sparking UNO, who later tied the game at 9-all with 13:21 remaining in the opening half.

HBU used an 11-1 run in a span of seven minutes to take a 20-10 lead with 6:15 to go in the first half. Both teams traded baskets, as HBU led the Privateers, 22-12, as UNO took a timeout with just over three minutes left in the opening half.

That timeout sparked the Privateers, who closed out the first half on an 8-0 run to close the HBU lead to two, 22-20.

Tayler Jefferson led HBU with five points, while Bruns and Nwanguma each had four. K. Thomas led all players with seven points.

It was the Steenholdt show at the start of the second half, as she scored 10 of HBU's first 12 points, as HBU led UNO 34-28 with 15:57 left in the second half.

UNO battled back, cutting the deficit to four, 37-33, with 12:21 remaining, but the Huskies used an 11-0 run to take a 15-point lead, 48-33, with 9:27 left in the second half.

HBU led by as many as 17 following a layup by McGarrachan at the 5:21-mark, but the Privateers cut the deficit to 12, 55-43, with 2:45 remaining. HBU closed out the remaining time making seven of eight free throws to close out the victory.

HBU will return home to face CSU Bakersfield on Tue., Jan. 15 at 7 pm.
