HOUSTON – Houston Baptist will look to get its first road win of the season when it takes on the University of New Orleans on Sat., Jan. 12 at 2 pm from Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.
The matchup will mark the first-ever meeting between the Huskies and Privateers. Both HBU and New Orleans will be in the Southland Conference in 2013-14.
HBU (3-13) shot a season-best 55% from the floor, and led visiting Delaware State by as many as 14, but the Lady Hornets came to Houston and shocked the Huskies, scoring four points in the final two seconds of overtime, in an 84-83 DSU win on Jan. 5.
Tayler Jefferson scored a career-high 29 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor, 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, and 8-of-10 from the line.
Rachel Arthur also scored a career-high 14 points.
Wiebke Bruns nearly recorded a double-double with eight points and 11 assists. The 11 assists were the most by a Husky in one game since Fallon Thomas dished out 11 at Prairie View A&M on Dec. 13, 2007.
Tierra Hawkins led DSU with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Tasia Bristow had 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
On the season,
Shanice Steenholdt leads HBU with 17.4 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 23 blocks and 39 steals. Jefferson is second with 9.6 ppg.
After starting the season 1-2, New Orleans (1-14) is on a 12-game losing streak, its latest setback being a 69-59 loss to visiting Southern Mississippi on Jan. 5. UNO led USM by four at halftime, but USM outscored the Privateers 42-28 in the second half.
Mirjam Sipos led UNO with a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists. Ance Celmina led USM with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
On the season, Keri Thomas leads UNO with 12.4 ppg. Mechel'le Thomas and Sipos are second and third with 9.6 and 9.4 ppg respectively. Mathilde Foglestrom leads the team with 8.1 rpg.
After the game, the Huskies will quickly head home and host CSU Bakersfield at Sharp Gym on Tue., Jan. 15 at 7 pm.
