Post-Game Interview with Thilo Borgmann and Mark Gendi (video)
HOUSTON – In a 1-1 tie with Oral Roberts at halftime, the Houston Baptist men's soccer team erupted for four second-half goals as the Huskies defeated the Golden Eagles, 5-1, in the regular season opener for both teams Friday evening from Sorrels Field.
The five goals by HBU were the most in one game since the Huskies shut out Howard 5-0 on Oct. 24, 2010.
Oral Roberts scored first, as Tom Adams scored, unassisted, 10 minutes into the match. ORU had a corner kick and after the initial shot was blocked, Adams picked up the rebound and found the back of the net.
Two minutes later, HBU tied things up at one apiece, as
Thilo Borgmann scored his first collegiate goal, assisted by
Mark Gendi, as Gendi sent a centering pass to Borgmann.
The teams entered halftime tied 1-1. HBU outshot ORU, 9-2, including 6-1 in shots on goal.
HBU took the lead for good on a goal by Gendi, assisted by
Kristopher Tyrpak, in the 50th minute. Oral Roberts failed the clear the ball deep in its box and Tyrpak took the ball, passed it to Gendi on the left side, and Gendi beat the keeper.
Just three minutes later,
John McDuffee scored, assisted by
Leonel Munoz, as the ball was bouncing deep in the ORU box and McDuffee found the back of the net to make it 3-1 Huskies.
Borgmann scored his second of the night to make it 4-1 HBU in the 68th minute, assisted by
Gustavo Alvarado. Alvarado passed to Borgmann on the left, who sent a long shot that beat the keeper short side.
HBU's final goal came off of the foot of
Zach Pierce in the 82nd minute, as he cut through the defenders and beat the keeper one-on-one.
HBU outshot ORU 19-4 in the half and 28-6 for the game.
Borgmann led all scorers with four points, followed by Gendi with three. McDuffee and Pierce had two apiece, and Tyrpak, Munoz, and Alvarengo each had one.
Zach Harwerth earned the victory in goal for HBU, making one save and allowing one goal. Ryan Grashik made 11 saves in the losing effort for the Golden Eagles.
HBU (1-0-0) will continue its home stand against Campbell on Sun., Aug. 26 at 1 pm.
