Women’s Basketball Falls at UTPA in Final Regular Season Game

EDINBURG, Texas – Short-handed Houston Baptist could not get any offense going, as the Huskies ended the regular season with a 43-14 loss at UT-Pan American Saturday evening from the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Brittany Barton led HBU (1-26, 0-10 GWC) with six points and set a new career high with eight rebounds. She played in a game-high 39 minutes. Joselyn Pugh and Maisie Elston each scored four points in 38 and 37 minutes of action, respectively. Pugh grabbed seven boards.

UT-Pan American (12-16, 5-5 GWC) was led in scoring by Franchesca Simon with seven points, followed by Ashley Watson with six points and Erin Lewis with five. Donna Jackson led all players with 10 rebounds. Lewis had six assists and three steals.

HBU did not get on the board until two Pugh free throws at the 12:15-mark of the first half, as UTPA led 10-2, and did not score its first basket until a jumper by Pugh with 8:22 left in the half, as UTPA led the Huskies 16-4.

The very next Husky possession, Elston had a layup and the Huskies were down by just 10, at 16-6, with 6:19 remaining in the opening half. But the Lady Broncs outscored the Huskies, 4-3, to lead HBU, 20-9, at the break.

Pugh and Elston each scored four points for HBU in the first 20 minutes, while Pugh and Barton each had three rebounds. Simon led UTPA with five points and Adanna Opara had six rebounds.

UTPA scored the second half's first two baskets before a successful jumper by Barton made the score 24-11 with 16:59 remaining in the game.

UTPA started clicking on the offensive end and outscored the Huskies, 19-3, to end the game.

HBU will await who it will face in the quarterfinal round of the Great West Conference Tournament, held Mar. 8-10 at the Jones Convocation Center on the campus of Chicago State University.
