Women’s Basketball Travels to UTPA In Final Regular Season Game Saturday

Huskies then head to Chicago next week for conference tournament

HOUSTON – Houston Baptist will look for its first conference win in the final regular season game of the year, when the Huskies take on UT-Pan American in Edinburg on Sat., Mar. 3, at 7 pm.

HBU is 1-11 lifetime against the Lady Broncs, who defeated the Huskies on their home court on Jan. 28, 55-41. In that game, Devyn Weymouth near recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds and eight points. Tayler Jefferson led HBU with 10 points, while Joselyn Pugh and Maisie Elston each scored nine. Donna Jackson led UTPA with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.

With just six players suited up, HBU (1-25, 0-9 GWC) played a very hard-fought game at Utah Valley on Tue., Feb. 28. But the bench and altitude were just too much for the Huskies, as they lost, 71-36, in the rescheduled game from Feb. 4.

Weymouth led HBU with 10 points and was second with four rebounds. Pugh scored eight points and had two blocks, while Elston grabbed a team-high five boards. Mollye Mlcak scored her first collegiate points and grabbed a career-high four rebounds, while Lauren Bozeman scored a career-high six points on two 3-pointers.

Taylor Huber led UVU with 16 points, while Sammie Jensen had a double-double of 10 points and 12 boards.

Shanice Steenholdt leads HBU with 18.7 ppg and 10.9 rpg, followed by Weymouth with 8.7 ppg and 6.1 rpg. Pugh is third with 7.2 ppg and 5.4 rpg. She has hit a team-best 79 percent from the charity stripe. Tayler Jefferson leads the team with 38 steals.

Jackson took a charge with 0.2 of a second left in overtime to lift host UTPA (11-16, 4-5 GWC) to a 71-70 win over Utah Valley on Feb. 25, spoiling UVU's chances of a regular season conference crown.

Three Lady Broncs finished in double-figures, led by Bianca Torre with 15 points, followed by Keandra Goodson and LaQuita Garner with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Goodson was the leader on the glass with eight rebounds.

Jensen led UVU with 23 points and 14 boards.

Torre leads UTPA with 10.3 ppg, followed closely by Garner with 10.2. Adanna Opara leads the Lady Broncs with 6.4 rpg. Torre is tops with 84 assists and 63 steals.

Following Saturday's contest in Edinburg, HBU heads to Chicago for the 2012 Great West Conference Tournament, held Mar. 8-10 at the Jones Convocation Center on the campus of Chicago State University.

Saturday is a very important day for three teams, trying to move up on the final day of the regular season. NJIT is currently in third with a 5-4 conference mark, with CSU and UTPA in fourth and fifth with identical 4-5 marks. CSU and NJIT play Saturday in New Jersey. UTPA holds the tiebreaker with CSU, defeating the Cougars twice, but NJIT holds the tiebreaker over UTPA.
