SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Devyn Weymouth scored a career-high 17 points, but it wasn't enough as Utah defeated Houston Baptist, 71-33, Friday afternoon from the Huntsman Center.

Weymouth led all players with 17 points and also tied for the team high of six rebounds with Ashleigh Nwanguma for HBU (2-9). Tayler Jefferson came off the bench to score five points, while Ekemini Essien scored four.

Taryn Wicijowski and Michelle Plouffe each scored 16 points for Utah (8-1), while Danielle Rodriguez was the third Ute in double-figures with 10 points. Plouffe grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

HBU started slowly, turning the ball over in its first seven possessions and Utah scoring 10 of the first 13 points of the half. But HBU made a valiant comeback, outscoring the Utes 10-5 to cut the deficit to two, 15-13, following a layup by Jefferson at the 13:10-mark of the opening half.

Neither team could score the ensuing five minutes, as HBU had several opportunities to score, as did Utah to try to increase its lead.

Utah scored three points to take an 18-13 lead, prompting an HBU timeout with 6:49 left in the first half. The Huskies scored on their next possession, on a layup by Weymouth, but Utah outscored HBU 10-0 in the final 6:30 for a 13-point lead at the break, 28-15.

Wicijowski scored a half-high 10 points for Utah, while Weymouth had nine points for HBU.

Utah never put on the break in the second half, outscoring HBU 43-18 in the final 20 minutes. The Utes increased their lead to 23 in the first six minutes before Weymouth's layup at the 13:57-mark.

After a media timeout at 12:09, Utah outscored HBU 17-10 to lead by 31, 62-31, with 3:30 left in regulation.

Erin McGarrachan's basket at 3:19 cut the deficit under 30, but those were the last points HBU scored, as Utah closed out the final three minutes 6-0.

HBU will conclude the Utah trip with a 6 pm CST tip at Southern Utah University on Mon., Dec. 17, before returning home to face Lamar at Sharp Gym on Fri., Dec. 21 at 6 pm.
