Men’s Basketball Falls to UT Arlington, 81-47

ARLINGTON, Texas –UT Arlington had 19 steals and scored 30 points off Houston Baptist turnovers to claim an 81-47 victory over the Huskies in non-conference basketball Thursday night at College Park Center.
 
Freshman guard James Harper led HBU (3-6) with eight points, while senior forward Art Bernardi was held to six points and four rebounds. Senior guard Marcus Davis and freshman guard Caleb Crayton led the Huskies with five rebounds apiece.
 
Karol Gruszecki led UTA (5-2) with 18 points, hitting 5-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-2 3-pointers and 6-of-6 from the line, to go along with six rebounds. Cameron Catlett added 13 points and Kevin Butler had 11 points, seven steals and four steals for the Mavericks. Jordan Reves posted a double-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds and also blocked five shots.
 
UTA shot 44 percent from the field for the game, 30 percent from behind the arc, and made 22-of-28 from the free-throw line. HBU shot 31 percent from the field, including 2-of-18 from long range, and made 11-of-21 from the line. UTA outrebounded HBU, 48-34, and forced the Huskies into 29 turnovers.
 
UTA opened the game with a 15-0 run over the first 4:24, but HBU got on the board by scoring the next six. The Mavericks scored seven-straight as part of a 12-2 spurt to extend their lead to 35-13 with 5:52 remaining in the half. UTA took a 47-21 lead into halftime.
 
In the first half, UTA shot 47 percent from the field, hitting 3-of-6 from 3-point range, and went 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. HBU shot only 28 percent, missing all eight of its 3-point attempts, and went 7-for-11 from the line.
 
After UTA went up 57-23, Smith knocked down a three, stole the inbounds pass and dished to Russell for a layup, but the Mavericks answered back to lead 67-32. The Mavericks led by as many as 38 three times over the last seven minutes.
 
The Huskies return home to host Arlington Baptist Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
