HOUSTON – Facing a stifling defense, Houston Baptist adjusted to it well, shooting 44 percent from the floor, but the Huskies could not prevail, falling to the Aggies 77-64 Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Husky Classic.
Shanice Steenholdt led HBU (2-5) with 15 points, while
Erin McGarrachan had 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Tayler Jefferson was the third Husky to finish in double figures, ending with 11 points. She had a team-high five assists.
Sydnee Fipps had a game-high 28 points for UC Davis (2-2), while Cortney French had 16 points and a team-high six boards. The Aggies' tough D forced 19 Husky turnovers, led by French and Blair Shinoda with four each.
UC Davis scored five of the first six points of the game, as Fipps opened the contest with a three-pointer just 12 seconds in, and after a free throw by
Rachel Arthur, Fipps scored on a layup as the Aggies led 5-1 90 seconds into the game.
French then scored the Aggies' seven of the next nine points, as UC Davis increased its lead to 14-5 with 16:18 remaining in the opening half.
After the Aggies nailed a three following a Husky possession which gave them their largest lead thus far, at 17-7, HBU used a 5-0 run to trim the deficit to five, 17-12. The run culminated on a jumper by
Brittany Barton following an Aggie turnover.
UC Davis used a 12-0 run to lead by 17 with just under nine minutes remaining in the first half. The Aggies hit four 3-pointers in that span, by four different players.
The Huskies continued to battle through the tough press, cutting the deficit by as few as six (34-28) with 1:41 left, following a pair of free throws by Jefferson. The Aggies ended the half on a 5-2 run to lead the Huskies by nine at the break, 39-30. McGarrachan hit a jumper with 31 seconds left to cut the deficit to single digits.
UC Davis began the second half outscoring the Huskies 10-2 until an Arthur three-pointer made the score 49-35 with 14:50 left.
HBU battled back to within 13, at 54-41, but the Aggies increased their lead to 18 following a three-pointer by Aniya Baker with 9:05 remaining in the second half.
HBU continued to chip away, bringing the deficit to 10 after a Barton three-pointer made the score 66-56 with 4:30 remaining. The Huskies came as close as nine, 71-62, after two
Devyn Weymouth free throws, but the Huskies intentionally fouled at that point, with only 43 seconds remaining, and UC Davis made 6-of-8 from the line.
HBU will conclude its four-game home stand against UT Arlington on Tue., Nov. 27 at 7 pm.
