HOUSTON – Houston Baptist struck first against recently ranked Denver, but the Pioneers tied the match in the second half and the two teams battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie in MPSF action Friday evening from Sorrels Field.

Denver was ranked 25th in the country last week before losing its first conference match at Air Force on Sept. 29. The Huskies are now 1-1-1 all-time against the Pioneers.

HBU very nearly scored the first goal of the match midway through the first half, as the Huskies were awarded a corner kick. Kristopher Tyrpak headed the ball into the net, but the Huskies were called offsides.

The Huskies would not be avenged, as they would score in the 40th minute on another corner kick. This time it was George Kelley who would score his first collegiate goal on a header off the kick from Thilo Borgmann.

The Huskies entered halftime leading Denver 1-0. HBU outshot Denver, 7-6, in the half.

Denver made some adjustments in the second half that saw the Pioneers in the Huskies' zone the majority of the half. The halftime speech worked for Denver, who tied the match at one just three minutes into the second half. Zach Bolden scored his second goal of the season, whose rocket of a shot hit the upper left part of the net, past the diving Zach Harwerth.

HBU got its second wind in the two overtimes, controlling the play for the next 20 minutes. The Huskies put pressure on the Pioneers and had three shots go wide, including two in the second overtime. Harwerth made one save in the first overtime for the Huskies.

Kevin Suarez started the match in goal for HBU and made one save in 45 minutes. Harwerth played the remaining 65 minutes and earned the tie, making two saves and allowing one goal.

Oliver Brown earned the tie for Denver (5-2-3, 0-1-1 MPSF Mtn. Div.), making four saves while allowing one goal in 110 minutes.

HBU (2-5-1, 0-1-1 MPSF Mtn. Div.) will host Air Force Sunday afternoon at 1 pm. The Falcons shocked the 5th-ranked New Mexico Lobos in Albuquerque tonight, defeating the Lobos 1-0 in overtime. Caleb Downey scored in the 93rd minute in the match's only goal.
