HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist women's basketball team gave up 22 offensive rebounds and 52 total boards in a home loss to Sam Houston State, 69-51, Tuesday evening at Sharp Gym.
The win was the first-ever for SHSU in the four-game history between the Huskies and Bearkats.
Shanice Steenholdt recorded game highs of 24 points and 15 rebounds for HBU (0-15), who shot 34 percent from the floor.
Devyn Weymouth scored 13 points, grabbed four rebounds, tied a career high with four assists and recorded two steals.
Tayler Jefferson scored six points and tied a career high with five rebounds.
Sequeena Thomas led SHSU with 16 points, while Jasmine Johnson finished with 15 points and tied the team high of seven rebounds with Jasmin Wiley. Britni Martin scored 12 points and had six assists.
The teams started the game very even, with four ties and no team leading by more than two points in just five minutes of action. SHSU took control at the 12:51-mark on a Husky turnover, which gave the Bearkats a 10-8 lead. SHSU scored 13 of the game's next 23 points to take a five-point lead, 23-18, with eight minutes left in the first half.
A three by Jefferson cut the deficit to two, but the Bearkats went on a 7-2 run to take a seven-point lead, 30-23. A Steenholdt jumper at the 4:08-mark cut the deficit to five, but SHSU closed out the first half on a 7-0 run to lead at the half by 12, 37-25.
Steenholdt led the Huskies in the first 20 minutes with 11 points and six rebounds. Thomas and Johnson led the Bearkats with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
SHSU started where they left off to start the second half, hitting two quick threes by Chanice Smith and Martin to lead 43-27.
The Huskies battled, eventually bringing the deficit to nine, 47-38, with 13:09 remaining in regulation, as Steenholdt scored eight of the 11 points for HBU.
SHSU scored nine straight points to build an 18-point lead, 56-38, before a Steenholdt jumper slowed the run. SHSU scored six-straight points following Steenholdt's basket to lead the Huskies, 62-40, with just under five minutes left in the game.
The closest the Huskies came the remaining five minutes was 15, as HBU outscored SHSU the remainder of the game, 11-7.
HBU will host Huston-Tillotson on Tue., Jan. 10 at 7 pm in the Huskies' final regular season game before starting Great West Conference play.
